Website statistics – what to do with them?

If you currently have a web statistics package for your site, you should be able to monitor your site’s usage, what search terms users are entering to find your site and where they are coming from. It’s worth spending an hour each month reviewing your website stats, the results can be invaluable.

  1. Look at the most and least popular pages.
    1. The most accessed pages are the communication line to your audience, ensure you are happy with their content
    2. Are these pages up-to-date?
    3. Are they refreshed regularly with new content?
    4. Do they say what you’d want your customers to read?  

       
  2. Study the phrases users enter into search engines which lead to your site.
    1. Are they relevant to the service you provide?
    2. Do you know your top 10 keywords?
    3. Are your top keywords integrated into your web content?

       
  3. Which marketing activity is working for your site?
    1. If sending e-newsletters check for the popularity of the link from your e-shot
    2. Which online directories bring visitors to your site?
    3. Which Google Adword campaigns are successful?
    4. Utilise your homepage to bring site sections that aren’t being viewed to the fore

       
  4. Housekeeping
    1. Are there any broken links or images that need fixing?
    2. Can you improve or remove the least accessed pages?
    3. Are your downloadable documents still available for download?
